April Third Thursday Event, PT Barnum’s 1845 letters written from Europe

April 20, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

PT Barnum’s 1845 letters written from Europe

On April 20, 2023, from 12-1 p.m., Barnum Museum Curator Adrienne Saint-Pierre will talk about one of the museum’s long-hidden treasures, a 750-page copybook of P. T. Barnum’s letters, written while he was on his first tour in Europe to introduce his young  protégé, General Tom Thumb.  The letters, dating from the mid-1840s, cover an extremely important time in Barnum’s career, when his meteoric rise to fame and fortune was just beginning (as was Tom Thumb’s).  During the pandemic shut-down, Ms. Saint-Pierre focused on reading the entire digitized volume, writing a weekly blog that shared a few letters at a time on her reading “journey.” Her 75-post blog, Barnum’s Letters from Abroad, has now been transformed into a professionally-narrated podcast series, Becoming Barnum: The Journey to Fame and Fortune, available wherever you get your podcasts, and on the Barnum Museum’s YouTube channel.  Ms. Saint-Pierre will share some of the highlights of Barnum’s letters and the surprising stories his correspondence reveals, helping us better understand this legendary figure.
