October Third Thursday Program: Connecticut Our Homeland Our History

In celebration of Archives Month 2023, we recognize that history is found not only in physical forms such as letters, diaries, and photographs, but also in oral traditions like storytelling.  Darlene Kascak (Schaghticoke) will lead a virtual discussion entitled “Connecticut, Our Homeland, Our History” on October 19, 2023, from 12:00 PM-1:00 PM. She will examine how traditional story tellers have passed down through generations the 12,000-year history of Indigenous Peoples in Connecticut.

Darlene is the Education Coordinator at The Institute for American Indian Studies, a museum and research center located in Washington, CT. She is a Traditional Native American Storyteller, a Schaghticoke Tribal Nation Member, and is active in The Schaghticoke Woman’s Traditional Council.  She believes in the importance of educating both children and adults about the many misconceptions and stereotypes concerning her ancestors.  Teaching from a Native American point of view gives young and old, alike, a new understanding of Connecticut’s Indigenous Peoples’ lives past and present.
