February Third Thursday Event: Finding Your Legacy African American Genealogy In Connecticut

Adrienne Billings-Smith will discuss the journey researchers who are interested in discovering Black Heritage can follow using the many resources found at the Connecticut State Library. Adrienne is a local attorney and Town Councilor in West Hartford, Connecticut. She also founded Concerned Parents of Color of West Hartford (CPCWH) in 2020 to advocate for change in education, legislation, and better representation. Her vision is to build and sustain an open, honest dialogue with leaders of the state, and to ensure that black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) and other marginalized communities have their voices heard and supported. Through her work with CPCWH she was selected to be the first Community Leader-in-Residence for University of Connecticut’s History Department, where she is leading a project which explores the effects of slavery on Black-Americans in Connecticut.  She is currently researching genealogy in Connecticut in hopes of discovering, and preserving Black stories.
