Gradual Emancipation: The Continued Effects of Slavery on Modern Black America in Connecticut

 

This program will look at how the history of slavery has influenced education, community, and wellness in the Greater Hartford Black community and how one group is taking steps to build social, educational, and political wealth. Join us on Thursday, February 18, 2021, to hear from Concerned Parents of Color of West Hartford (CPCWH) and UConn History Department, a partnership that has dug into the primary source records of our state to research slavery in Connecticut and to examine how that history has shaped our state today. Adrienne Billings-Smith, Dr. Jason Oliver Chang, and Jia Cai will share their four-part research strategy, curriculum on slavery and gradual emancipation in Connecticut, a virtual magazine, and a look at what’s to come.

This program is part of Connecticut State Library’s Third Thursday Lecture Series which explores a diverse range of interesting topics about Connecticut’s history, culture, geography, and more.
