DESCRIPTION:Dr. Matthew Warshauer\, Steve Thornton\, and John Monahan will be part of a special Third Thursday panel discussion about how we commemorate war on April 20\, 2017\, from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. at the Connecticut State Library\, 231 Capitol Avenue\, Hartford.\n \nLibraries\, museums and archives around Connecticut (and around the country) continue to develop and offer exhibits and programs relating to the 100th anniversary of World War I. The panel will consider such questions as\, Why do we commemorate wars and other\, often very tragic events? What does it mean to commemorate an event? And what are some of the issues that we should consider when planning commemorations?  This distinguished panel will be moderated by State Librarian Kendall Wiggin.

DESCRIPTION:(Hartford\, CT) In celebration of American Archives Month\, Connecticut State Historian Walter Woodward will lead a discussion on one of Connecticut’s most popular governors \, Governor John Dempsey on October 20\,  2016\, from 12:00 p.m. – 12:45 p.m.\, at the Connecticut State Library.  Walter Woodward’s talk is based on his research at the State Library\, in preparation for the centenary commemoration celebration of Governors Dempsey’s birth in Cahir\, Ireland. The Cahir Social and Historical Society marked the centenary of the year of birth of Governor John Dempsey with a program of events in September 2015. \nGovernor Dempsey was an Irish immigrant who became one of Connecticut’s most beloved politicians. He served as Connecticut’s Governor from 1961 to 1971\, overseeing the passage of a job-training law that became the model for the Federal Manpower Training Act\, and the first revision of the Connecticut Constitution in 150 years\, which redrew the boundaries of the General Assembly districts.  This talk is part of the State Library and Museum of Connecticut History’s Third Thursday Brown Bag Lunchtime Speaker series.  This series features a variety of speakers on various aspects of Connecticut History.  All programs are free and open to the public and attendees should feel free to bring their lunch.

DESCRIPTION:Deborah Child will lead a discussion based on her book ““Soldier\, Engraver\, Forger: Richard Brunton’s Life on the Fringe in America’s New Republic””\, on May 19\, 2016\, at the Connecticut State Library.  Once described as a man of great ingenuity and skill\, Richard Brunton literally lead a “life on the fringe.” After deserting the British army in the midst of the American Revolution\, he tried to establish himself as an engraver and dye-sinker first in Boston\, Massachusetts\, and then in Providence\, Rhode Island. \nWhen these efforts failed\, like so many craftsman in the New Republic\, he took to the road working as a journeyman in his craft. Still unable to secure a livelihood\, he often resorted to creating counterfeit paper money and coins. SUMMARY:Third Thursdays at the Connecticut State Library\, Vietnam War Veteran Dennis Mannion discusses The Battle of Khe Sanh
DESCRIPTION:Dennis Mannion served on Hill 861 as an Artillery Forward Observer Vietnam War: the battle for Khe Sanh. Over the course of his time in Vietnam\, Mannion was injured twice. One time\, a mortar shell landed only a few feet from him\, nearly taking his life. The metal from the mortar shredded his towel\, tearing it to pieces; an indication of what the shrapnel could have done to his body. The brutality of the battle was as clear and unmistakable. “If you get killed\, you just get killed.” Mannion will share his experience of fighting in that epic battle that took place during the Vietnam War.

He conducted postdoctoral research at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in Paris\, France and received a Harry Frank Guggenheim Research Grant. \n

SUMMARY:Third Thursdays at the Connecticut State Library\, “The Case of the Piglet’s Paternity: Trials from the New Haven colony 1619-1663”\, Book discussion with Judge Jon C. Blue
DESCRIPTION:  \nJudge Jon C. Blue\nJudge Jon C. Blue\, became a Superior Court Judge in 1989 and presides over criminal trials in New Haven. He has written several law review articles about constitutional law and Connecticut legal history. While perusing a rare book collection\, he found a tattered Nineteenth Century edition of the records of the short-lived New Haven Colony. The records contained amazingly vivid reports of colonial trials\, but they were frustratingly incomplete – sexual matters had been omitted for purposes of propriety. That led to a search for the original Seventeenth Century manuscript. The Case of the Piglet’s Paternity combines the results of this archival research with the observations of an experienced judge. \n

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ira Spar will discuss his new book\, New Haven’s Civil War Hospital: A history of Knight U.S.\nGeneral Hospital\, 1862-1865\, Thursday\, April 16\, 2015\, from Noon to 12:45 in Memorial Hall at the Connecticut State Library\, 231 Capitol Avenue\, Hartford\, CT.\nDr. Spar\, will tell the story of the doctors\, staff\, soldiers\, and families who were instrumental in the design and function of Knight U.S. General Hospital in New Haven\, Conn. The military hospital was built in response to the tremendous need to care for the wounded soldiers of the Union Army during the Civil War\, an era before the identification of bacteria\, viruses\, or universal protection from bodily\nfluids\, when more soldiers died from non-combat related diseases than from battlefield wounds. Using\nexcerpts from letters\, diaries and newspaper articles\, Dr. Spar will provide an insightful look at the lives of surgeons Jonathan Knight\, Pliny Adams Jewett and Timothy Beers Townsend and the hardships they endured during the American Civil War. Dr. Spar’s talk is part of the State Library and Museum of Connecticut History’s Third Thursday BrownBag Lunchtime speaker series. This series features a\nvariety of speakers on various aspects of Connecticut History. All programs are free and open to the public and attendees should feel free to bring their lunch. \nDr. Ira Spar\, is a member of the Hartford Medical Society\, the Hartford Civil War Round table\, and the Society of Civil War Surgeons. He served two years of active duty in the U.S. Army including battalion surgeon in the Republic of South Vietnam\, 1969-1971\, and has spent his medical career dealing with trauma as an orthopedic and hand surgeon. He lives in Farmington\,\nConnecticut.
