SUMMARY:October Third Thursday Program\, An Afrocentric Prospective: The Making of the First Black U.S. Diplomat Through a Cultural Lens of Blackness
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nWilliam Fothergill\, MA\, MSW\, CPC\, LPC \nEbenezer D. Bassett was the first African American appointed to the position of ambassador by the United States government. However little is known about his personal life. The narratives written about him have not examined his life through an Afrocentric worldview and African perspective.  On October 20\, 2022\, from 12-1 p.m.\, William Fothgergill will discuss the life and the legacy of Ebenezer D. Bassett. \nWilliam Fothergill is an independent family historian specializing in the history of early New England people of color. He was inducted as a member of the Sons of the American Revolution after proving he is a direct lineal descendent of several (Connecticut) African-Native American Revolution soldiers. Mr. Fothergill serves as the chairperson of the Ebenezer D. Bassett Memorialization Committee where he oversees the Bassett Award Ceremonies (i.e.\, Humanitarian Awards and Student Achievement Awards). He has received several recognitions and honors for his work in the field of Men’s & Masculinities Studies. Awards include the Curtis D. SUMMARY:February Third Thursday Event: Finding Your Legacy African American Genealogy In Connecticut
DESCRIPTION:Adrienne Billings-Smith will discuss the journey researchers who are interested in discovering Black Heritage can follow using the many resources found at the Connecticut State Library. Adrienne is a local attorney and Town Councilor in West Hartford\, Connecticut. She also founded Concerned Parents of Color of West Hartford (CPCWH) in 2020 to advocate for change in education\, legislation\, and better representation. Her vision is to build and sustain an open\, honest dialogue with leaders of the state\, and to ensure that black\, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) and other marginalized communities have their voices heard and supported. DESCRIPTION:                                                                                                              \n  \nHartford\, CT- Award-winning author Jennifer Smith Turner will discuss her latest novel Child Bride on Thursday\, February 25\, at 6:30 p.m. during a virtual author talk\,presented by the Black Caucus of the American Library Association-Connecticut Affiliate (BCALA-CT) and the Connecticut State Library. \nChild Bride is the story of the segregated south of the mid-1900s\, in which fourteen-year-old Nell bears witness to a world that embraces the oppression of women.  She is fascinated with the prospect of being an independent person—but when she turns sixteen\, she is married off and brought to the city of Boston as a bride.  \nChild Bride was named best fiction e-book for 2020 by the Black Caucus of the American Library Association and BiblioBoard. The award honors the best self-published e-books in fiction and poetry by an African American author in the U.S. Child Bride was also a 2020 NYC Big Book Award recipient.  \nJennifer Smith Turner is a New England–born writer. She is the author of two poetry books\, Lost and Found: Rhyming Verse Honoring African American Heroes and Perennial Secrets: Poetry & Prose. DESCRIPTION:“Remembering Seicheprey and the Boys from Connecticut’s 102nd Infantry” \nEarly in the morning of 20 April 1918\, 3\,000 German storm troopers attacked the town of Seicheprey\, engaging soldiers of the 102nd Regiment in the first major military action undertaken by American troops in World War I. 81 Connecticut soldiers were Killed in Action as the 102nd Regiment repulsed the German attack.  The memory of these Connecticut soldiers’ bravery and sacrifice has faded in the 100 years since the action at Seicheprey occurred. \nPlease Join us.

SUMMARY:Dr. Allison Horrocks will give a presentation on Connecticut's  History of Youth and Recreation During The Progressive Era
DESCRIPTION:(Hartford)- On May 11\, 2017\, from 12:00-1:00\, PM. Dr. Allison Horrocks will give a presentation on Connecticut’s history of youth and recreation in the Progressive Era\, at the Connecticut State Library\, in the Museum of Connecticut History. Dr. Horrocks will discuss the development of recreations and parks in Connecticut during the Progressive Era. \n  \nDuring the Progressive Era\, Connecticut was highly regarded by many experts as a pioneering state for its expansive network of parks\, playgrounds\, and other spaces for recreation.  Hartford was lauded as a striking example of a planned urban landscape and Bridgeport was known as “Park City.” Though many in Connecticut had an especially keen interest in shaping the built environment and “natural” spaces in the state to better suit the peoples’ need for recreation\, these efforts were also part of a larger national and international trend. As cities grew\, many urban reformers took to the streets\, bringing children out of dangerous areas to make way for trolleys and eventually\, cars.  Dr. Horrock’s talk is part of the State Library and Museum of Connecticut History’s Third Thursday Brownbag Lunchtime Speaker series.  The National Digital Newspaper Program is a joint partnership of the Library of Congress and the U.S. National Endowment for the Humanities. All attendees should feel free to bring their lunch.  Dr. Horrocks contributed a study guide on this topic to the Connecticut Digital Newspaper Project\, http://ctdigitalnewspaperproject.org/ which is sponsored by the National Digital Newspaper Program. \n  \nDr. Allison Horrocks is a public historian. Her primary research interest is the history of home economics. In addition to teaching at the University of Connecticut\, Allison has been employed at a range of house museums and historic sites\, including the Preservation Society of Newport County and Mystic Seaport. Allison now works for the Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park\, a bi-state unit of the National Park Service. \n

DESCRIPTION:  \n(Hartford\, CT) Negative political campaigns are nothing new\, but what can citizens do to make them better?  On Friday\, October 28\, join a pre-election Conversation at Noon that touches on current efforts to increase voter participation and strengthen Connecticut through greater civic engagement.  Dr. Matthew Warshauer from Central Connecticut State University will start the program with a brief discussion on the “meanness” of past political elections in the United States\, particularly the contests of 1800 and 1828.  Rather than bemoaning the negativity of the 2016 campaign\, join the Connecticut Network’s (CT-N) Diane Smith for a panel discussion on how to improve the state of civics in Connecticut. \nDr. Warshauer will be joined on the panel by Michelle Mays from the Hartford Foundation’s “My Hope. My Voice. My Vote” campaign\, which is encouraging citizens to vote. In an effort to help preserve this significant part of our history\, the Avon Free Public Library will be working with the Remembering World War One project at the Connecticut State Library\, to gather old photos\, documents\, mementos and other materials from the war to digitize and preserve them in the Connecticut Digital Archive. \nOn Tuesday\, October 18\, 2016\, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.\, area residents can bring in their photos\, letters\, and other keepsakes to have them photographed or scanned by professional staff. Tina Panik\, Reference and Adult Services Manager of the Avon Free Public Library said\, “This project allows the Avon Library and Avon Historical Society to connect with our community through personal memories and mementos of World War I. We look forward to the stories our residents have to share.” There will also be a Conservation Specialist on hand to talk about preserving photographs\, letters\, and other keepsakes. Personal Digital Archiving materials will also be provided for visitors.\n This event will be the first Digitization Day in the Farmington Valley.  Area residents are being asked to look around\, contact family\, friends\, and neighbors to find WWI related items and stories that might be tucked away in drawers or trunks. The only prerequisites for inclusion in this project are that participants must be Connecticut residents and that items are related to WWI. We welcome photos and keepsakes from men and women from around the world as these help us tell the stories of the men and women of Connecticut today.

Backlund was an accomplished amateur wrestler at North Dakota State University and had a career as a professional wrestler for over 30 years.  Backlund was inducted into the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Hall of Fame in 2013. Current WWE star Darren Young will join Mr. Backlund Backlund: From All-American Boy to Professional Wrestling World Champion.

DESCRIPTION:Deborah Child will lead a discussion based on her book ““Soldier\, Engraver\, Forger: Richard Brunton’s Life on the Fringe in America’s New Republic””\, on May 19\, 2016\, at the Connecticut State Library.  Once described as a man of great ingenuity and skill\, Richard Brunton literally lead a “life on the fringe.” After deserting the British army in the midst of the American Revolution\, he tried to establish himself as an engraver and dye-sinker first in Boston\, Massachusetts\, and then in Providence\, Rhode Island. \nWhen these efforts failed\, like so many craftsman in the New Republic\, he took to the road working as a journeyman in his craft. Still unable to secure a livelihood\, he often resorted to creating counterfeit paper money and coins. SUMMARY:Veterans Day Celebration at the Hartford Public Library and the Connecticut State Library
DESCRIPTION:HARTFORD\, CT —Hartford Public Library\, in partnership with the Connecticut State Library\, will celebrate this Veterans Day with back-to-back programs honoring veterans. The Hartford Public Library is closed on November 11 in remembrance\, and we will be using the two days prior to reflect on our veterans’ military service\, achievements\, and contributions. \nOn November 9th at 6 pm\, the Hartford Public Library will present a special screening of The Borinqueneers\, a 2007 documentary about the 65th Infantry Regiment. The 65th Infantry Regiment was the only all Puerto Rican regiment in the United States Army and its history spans from WWI to present-day. The regiment was nicknamed The Borinqueneers in reference to Puerto Rico’s original Taíno name\, Borinquen. \nA photo exhibit and a lecture by the film’s executive producer\, Noemí Figueroa Soulet\, will accompany the program. Soulet will address Hispanic military contributions and discuss the making of the documentary film. A question and answer session will follow the screening. HPL will be showing the film in the Center for Contemporary Culture as a part of both our Veterans Day and Hispanic Heritage Month programming. \nOn November 10\, at 6:00 p.m.\, in partnership with the Ballet Theatre Company\, the Hartford Public Library will present “Moving Toward Social Change”. This dance performance\, choreographed by Artistic Director and U.S. Marine Iraq War Veteran Roman Baca\, will incorporate recent veteran initiatives\, artwork\, and poetry. The anticipated audience will bridge the civilian/veteran divide by bringing together local civilians\, advocates for art\, advocates for social justice\, veterans\, art afficianados\, and fans of poetry and dance.  The program’s choreography is inspired by the veteran experience\, the art of veteran artist Romare Bearden\, and the poetry of Hartford’s Lynn Hoffman. A panel discussion will follow the performance\, featuring Dierdra Harris Kelley (Co-Director of the Romare Bearden Foundation)\, Lynn Hoffman (poet and mother of a U.S. Marine Afghanistan War Veteran)\, and Aaron Thao (dancer and son of Hmong refugees).  The performance will take place in the Center for Contemporary Culture at Hartford Public Library and light refreshments will be provided. \n“This Veterans Day\, together with the Connecticut State Library\, we wanted to emphasize the enduring legacy of our servicemen and women\,” said Hartford Public Library’s chief Executive Officer Matt Poland. “Their contributions do not stop at the end of their military careers. In addition to our ongoing freedom and safety\, our veterans offer us a crucial perspective on our own culture—one that we should consider on all days\, but particularly Veterans Day.” Both programs presented in honor of our veterans are free and open to the public
