(Hartford, CT)- 2017 marks the 100th Anniversary of the United State’s entry into World War One. In an effort to help preserve this significant part of our history, the Pequot Library and the Fairfield Museum and History Center will be partnering with the Connecticut State Library’s Remembering World War One project to hold a Digitization Day. During the event, funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, we will be digitizing old photos, documents, mementos, and other objects related to the war at home and abroad.
On Saturday, March 25, 2017, from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. area residents can bring in their photos, letters and other keepsakes to the Pequot Library, and have them photographed or scanned by staff. Pequot Library’s Executive Director, Stephanie J. Coakley said, “By participating in the digitization day at Pequot Library you are recognizing the contributions of the men and women who served their country during this great conflict while contributing to this important state-wide initiative to preserve archival items of the period. The program is also an interesting intergenerational opportunity to learn more about your family in a real hands-on way.”
Area residents and their family, friends, and neighbors are being asked to find World War One related items and stories that might be tucked away in drawers or trunks. We welcome photos and keepsakes from men and women from around the world that will help us tell the stories of the men and women of Connecticut today. Digital images of these objects will be made available online and preserved in the Connecticut Digital Archive. The only prerequisite for inclusion in this project is that participants are Connecticut residents and that items are related to World War One.
