Historical Note

On the morning of December 14, 2012, a lone gunman shot his way into the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, and then shot and killed 26 people, 20 of whom were children.

The tragedy reverberated around the world. Letters, cards, artwork, poetry, and objects were sent to Newtown in the aftermath of the school shootings. The response was immediate and so overwhelming, the Town of Newtown established a post office box as a portal for condolence.

Town employees and volunteers opened each piece of mail. The Newtown Documentation Project sorted the mail into two groups: letters/cards and artwork. The group then sorted the letters and cards by state and country.

The Town of Newtown estimates 500,000 messages of condolence were sent to the Town, of which approximately 250,000 were correspondence. The latter comprises the Newtown 12/14 Letters of Condolence collection.

Arrangement

The majority of the collection is arranged alphabetically by U.S. state, by country, and by "geography unknown." A smaller subset is organized by more specific headers indicating the category of sender, or topic, such as schools, religious, groups, individuals, news clippings, and miscellaneous. Miscellaneous is unsorted materials. Material marked "special" was chosen as such by the Newtown Documentation Project; this volunteer organization read and sorted the majority of the letters received by the Town of Newtown.
